Authorities in Utah have arrested Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old from Utah County, in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk during a campus event at Utah Valley University earlier this week.
Robinson was taken into custody late Thursday following a multiday manhunt, officials confirmed Friday. He is currently being held without bail at Utah County Jail on charges including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily harm. Formal charging documents are expected to be filed early next week.
The arrest came after Robinson allegedly confessed or implied responsibility to a family member, who then alerted a friend connected to law enforcement. Robinson’s father also identified him in surveillance photos released by the FBI, confronted him, and later notified authorities.
Investigators say a bolt-action rifle believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered, along with spent and unfired rounds marked with slogans such as “Bella Ciao” and other anti-fascist messages. Ballistics evidence suggests the fatal shot was fired from a rooftop roughly 200 yards from where Kirk was speaking.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox confirmed Robinson’s detention and praised the role of community members in bringing forward information that led to the arrest. Authorities say Robinson acted alone, and no additional suspects are being sought.
Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed Tuesday during a packed student event, sparking widespread political reaction and heightened security concerns around campus speakers nationwide.
The investigation into Robinson’s background and possible motives is ongoing.
