Police say a suspect is in custody after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot during a campus event at Utah Valley University on Tuesday evening.

According to Deseret News, a single shot was fired inside the auditorium while Kirk was speaking to students and community members. Law enforcement responded immediately, detaining the suspected shooter and securing the scene.

The Guardian reported that the incident sparked chaos as attendees scrambled for safety. Kirk, 31, was struck by gunfire while on stage. His current medical condition has not been publicly disclosed.

U.S. News & World Report confirmed that Turning Point USA, the organization Kirk co-founded and leads as CEO, acknowledged the shooting in a statement. “Our focus is on Charlie’s health and safety,” the group said, adding that they are working closely with authorities.

CNN noted that Kirk is a high-profile ally of former President Donald Trump and a frequent presence on college campuses, where he is known for hosting debates and advocating for conservative policies.
