A 36-year-old mother of three, Ariean Fabrizio Colton from Kenai, was viciously attacked and dragged by a bear as she jogged near her home, a frightening incident locals initially mistook for a pet mauling. Rushed to an Anchorage hospital by helicopter, she underwent multiple surgeries and is now recovering. A GoFundMe has raised over $58,000 toward her $100,000 medical bill. Wildlife officials remain on high alert. The Sun

Frozen Fjord, Raging Waters—Alaska’s Close Call

Landslide

On August 10, a massive landslide in Tracy Arm Fjord unleashed a colossal tsunami, rocks from the South Sawyer Glacier plunged into the fjord, pushing waves up 1,400 feet and triggering a 100-foot-high tsunami. Thanks partly to poor weather conditions and early hour, no one was in harm’s way. Scientists cite glacier retreat and thawing permafrost as possible culprits behind increased geological instability, emphasizing the growing need for monitoring and early-warning systems.

In a deeply divisive move, the Alaska State Medical Board approved draft language classifying gender-affirming care for minors as “unprofessional conduct.” The proposal—pushed forward by a board member who subsequently resigned to run for governor—now faces a 30-day public comment period and legal review. Critics argue it’s politically motivated and undermines medical consensus; over 700 medical professionals have signed a letter opposing the measure. AP News
